LinkedIn Launches in Spanish

Mountain View, CA — July 24, 2008 — LinkedIn the world’s largest professional network, has announced that they’ve launched a Spanish version of the LinkedIn Web site. Spanish-speaking users will now be able to enjoy the benefits of LinkedIn in their own language.

“Spanish-speaking markets are of great importance,” said Dan Nye, CEO of LinkedIn. “Offering our site in Spanish is one more step towards increasing the global quality of our network, and a sign of commitment to our users in Latin America and Spain.” LinkedIn’s decision to offer its services in Spanish is supported by the fact that Spanish is the second most-spoken native language in the world (500 million people), after only Mandarin Chinese, and is the third most-used language on the internet (behind English and Chinese). In addition to several hundred thousand members in Spain, LinkedIn currently has nearly one million users in Latin America, where it has doubled in the past year.

“By offering our site in Spanish and providing local users a relevant experience, we expect to double our user base in Latin America by year end,” said Florencia Pettigrew, LinkedIn’s International marketing manager. LinkedIn is growing at a rate of more than one million new members a month (one every two seconds) and is also available on mobile devices. LinkedIn’s business model is based on a combination of revenue sources from advertising, job postings, premium subscriptions and corporate accounts.

Among its users in Spanish-speaking countries, LinkedIn includes leading entrepreneurs and executives of major national and multinational companies. Miguel Angel Oliva, Public Relations and Corporate Affairs Vice President for HBO Latin America comments: “When I joined LinkedIn I realized that it had a professional focus, that it was a serious business community.” He continues: “I would recommend new users to join groups of interest, to develop their profile and participate actively on LinkedIn.”

According to Nielsen @plan data, LinkedIn attracts an affluent professional audience in the US, and LinkedIn members in Spanish-speaking markets also tend to be well educated. The most important educational institutions in Latin America and Spain have an extensive representation of alumni in the network.
